Together with agriculture, stockbreeding has been one of the major occupations in the Basque Country. The cheese factories in the area open their doors to visitors who want to learn more about the making of Idiazabal cheese. Sheep graze on the grass around the farmhouses, at the foot of the Basque mountains.
This visit gives you a chance to learn about the work of Basque farmers visiting a 16th-century farmhouse. Afterwards, we will also learn about the work of the shepherds and taste the result of their work: a really exceptional cheese. You will see the pastures, milking systems, milk containers, the rennet curdling process, the press and refrigerators used, among other things.
The trip continues through the landscape until we reach the Cider House. You will get to know the family that runs it and the steps required to make Basque cider will be explained. You will then taste the product, first in the bottle and then sitting down to a traditional cider house menu.
