Basque rural sports championship and cider cellar

22/09/2025

Come with us to experience the excitement of Basque rural sports and enjoy an authentic experience at a local cider cellar.

Basque rural sports championship and cider cellar

Are you looking for something unique that combines sports, fun, and good food? We propose a perfect day to enjoy with family, friends, or your coworkers: a Basque rural sports championship followed by a visit with tasting and lunch at a traditional cider cellar. All organized by Sagardoa Route, the Basque Cider Route, so you just have to come and enjoy.

Origin of Basque Rural Sports

Basque rural sports (herri kirolak in Basque) have their origins in traditional farmhouse and rural labor. Over the centuries, farmers turned their hard tasks into challenges among neighbors, demonstrating their strength, skill, and endurance in a festive atmosphere. Over time, these events have evolved into popular competitions that today form an essential part of Basque cultural heritage.

More than a sport, they are a connection to our roots, and an ideal way to teach children and adults the values of effort, teamwork, self-improvement, and respect.

An ideal plan for everyone

This experience is perfect for families with children, groups of friends looking for a different activity, or for companies looking for an original, active team-building day that immerses them in the local culture.

All activities are tailored to the group's age, fitness level, and number of participants. It's not about winning, it's about having fun!

These are the rural games we usually play:

1. Corn Harvest

Inspired by traditional corn harvesting in farmhouses. Participants compete to harvest the largest number of ears of corn in the shortest possible time, just as they did during the intense harvesting days before modern combine harvesters arrived in the fields. A challenge that requires agility, speed, and coordination.

2. Stone Pulling

One of the most spectacular events, based on the ancient task of pulling stones or heavy loads with oxen. In this competition, participants must move large blocks of stone, imitating the physical effort required to transport materials in rural areas. A true demonstration of brute strength!

3. Chingas game

This involves traveling the longest distance possible while carrying an iron weight in each hand, without letting go. This game represents the effort of carrying tools or buckets of water around the farm. Endurance and technique are key: it's not just about strength, but also about being able to endure the pain in your forearms and maintaining balance.

4. Sack Race

A classic that never fails. Participants compete by jumping into sacks, a fun event that always brings smiles. Although today it's known as a folk game, it also recalls the methods used to transport products such as potatoes or legumes, which were carried and moved in burlap sacks.

5. Basque Bowling

Unlike other competitions, bowling is the only rural sport not originally based on work. It was played for pure pleasure in villages, especially in town squares. There are several forms depending on the region, but they all share the essence of a social game, where aim and technique take precedence over strength.

6. Sack-on-the-Back Game

Inspired by smugglers who crossed the Pyrenees carrying sacks of merchandise on their backs, bypassing border controls. In this competition, participants must travel a distance with a heavy sack on their backs, mimicking that clandestine and dangerous endeavor. A fun experience that also connects us with a lesser-known part of Basque history.

7. Apple Picking

An activity directly related to the origin of cider. Participants must collect apples from the ground in baskets, as is traditionally done at the end of summer to begin the cider-making process.

8. Tug-of-war

A team game that symbolizes unity and coordination. Although today it's played for fun, its origins lie in port work, where fishermen and sailors had to pull ropes together to pull fishing boats to land. Collective strength was essential, and that essence is preserved in this game.

And of course, the winning team will receive a prize for their effort and coordination. The prize will be a traditional Basque Country item, so you can take a little piece of our land home with you.

Cider Cellar Tasting and Traditional Menu

After so much activity, it's time to recharge your batteries. The second part of the experience consists of a short visit to a local cider house, where you'll learn firsthand how sagardoa (cider) is made, from apple picking to its fermentation in large wooden barrels called kupelak.

During the visit, you'll have the opportunity to taste cider straight from the barrel during the traditional txotx ritual, and learn the secrets of this ancient drink, a symbol of the Basque Country.

And to top off the day, you'll enjoy a classic cider house menu, consisting of:

  • Cod omelet
  • Fried cod with peppers
  • Grilled steak
  • Idiazabal cheese with quince jelly and walnuts
  • Cider and water

A well-rounded experience that combines tradition, culture, sport, and gastronomy in a welcoming, natural setting.
