V Basque Country Popular Cider Championship

V BASQUE COUNTRY POPULAR CIDER COMPETITION

1. What is the cider competition of the Basque Country?

This year we will celebrate the fifth edition of the popular cider competition of the Basque Country. This competition contains 4 semi-finals and one final. The cider of the cider houses, which want to participate on this competition, will be sampled. The popular jury is made of the guest who would like to taste the cider and the special dinner for that. Furthermore those guests have to tell their opinion about the different cider sorts. If you would like to buy a ticket for the tasting, please make sure that you buy it directly at the ticket shop in the different municipalities or in the Basque region. (Semi-finals 26,00 € and for the final 32,00 €.)

The semi-finals will be in Aduna, Lizartza, Orio and Zornotza and the final of this competition will be in Ergobia (Astigarraga). The tasters are not allowed to know the names of the different cider sorts therefore it will be a blind tasting. After the final the tasters will get the names of the 12 finalists. For the edition of the “V. Popular Cider Competition” there will be 41 cider houses from 19 different municipalities of the Basque Country.

2. What does it mean to be part of the “popular jury”?

The cider tasters sit down for eating and for tasting the different cider sorts. First they will give their points to the cider houses which will be at the semi-finals and at the final. Therefore they can give 5-10 points for each cider. If you like tasting different sorts of cider and have a good dinner this competition would be exactly the right thing for you!

3. Recovering old traditions

This is the fourth edition of the popular competition. Since four years of the cider association of Gipuzkoa we recover this tradition with a lot of pleasure and enthusiasm. They celebrated several of these competitions in the past. Since 1967 the Association of Cider organized many popular competitions in cooperation with the municipalities and societies.

6. Rating system

The cider sorts will be placed on the table as soon as all tasters sat down. They have to rate all of the ciders from 5 until 10 points. The cider on the table is without a label so therefore the tasters are not able to know what kind of cider it is. After each semi-final the tasters will get the information of the numbers which will be in the final. In the end, so after the great final, they publish the names of the 12 finalists.
