Basque cider makers have been producing organic apples, musts, and ciders for years. Caring for our environment is essential for the production of high quality products. Therefore, in the Basque Country, there are

many producers with organic apple orchards who produce cider without the use of chemicals. The selection of organic ciders in the Basque Country is as follows:

EKAIN 1565 BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

Ekain Euskal Sagardo Ekologikoa is an organic cider produced at the Irure Txiki Cider House in Zestoa. The organic work is carried out from the opening of the cider house, from the apple orchard to the bottle. They make the 100% of their cider with Basque organic apple varieties. In there orchard, they have 2,000 apple trees with 30 varieties of apple varieties from the Basque Country.

Ekain Euskal Sagardo Ekologikoa is the traditional natural cider, produced using modern techniques. It is made with a blend of sour and bitter apples. It is golden, fragrant, and full-bodied.

ETXEBERRIA BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

The Etxeberria cider house has been around for 50 years. Its cider has always been produced, but it is geared toward home consumption. They began bottling and selling it in 1970.

Its organic apples come from Astigarraga and the Sagastume farm house in Asteasu. They use different types of apples: Urtebi Txikia, Txalaka, Urtebi Haundia, Goikoetxe, and Patzuloa mainly. Etxeberria Euskal Sagardo Ekologikoa is a straw yellow color cider, pleasant on the nose and long and balanced on the palate.

GARTZIATEGI BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

According to experts, Gartziategi is one of the oldest cider houses, dating back to the 16th century, in the Urumea River valley. With the knowledge passed down from generation to generation, they have adapted the cider house to the modern day. All the cider produced by Gartziategi is certified with the Euskal Sagardoa Designation of Origin, and it is also organic in a big percentage.

Gartziategi's Basque Organic Cider has a bright golden color, fresh fruit aromas, and a fine, balanced sparkle on the palate.

IPARRAGIRRE BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

Beobide-Iparragirre Basque organic cider is one of the Iparragirre cider house's flagship products. It is made with apples from Iparragirre's apple orchards, respecting the environment and with the highest quality.

Different types of local apple varieties are used to make Beobide organic cider, mainly: Moko, Goikoetxe, Txalaka, Merabi, Urtebi Txiki, Manttoni and Urtebi Haundi.

It has a deep, fragrant, yellowish color. In the mouth, the touches of sourness and mature apples combine perfectly.

IZETA BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

Five generations linked to the world of cider have written the history of Izeta Sagardotegia. Three decades have passed since the cider house opened under the direction of Manuel Iruretagoiena, and today, the cider house guarantees the highest quality and flavor.

As for IZ Euskal Sagardo Ekologikoa organic cider, it is made with 100% native organic apples, that is, with organic apples from several farms that surround Izeta and Urola Kosta. It is a fragrant cider, with an intense straw yellow color and a great balance created in the mouth by the sweet and sour apples.

OIHARTE BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

Oiharte Sagardotegia is a young cider house located in Zerain, run by Maite Retolaza Ojanguren and Haritz Eguren Urrestarazu. They began to sell their cider with the 2010 cider. Although Haritz and Maite's families have always produced cider, as in other cider houses in the Basque Country, the marketing of Oiharte cider has started with Maite and Haritz.

Oiharte Basque Organic Cider is a dark yellow cider with a full body, juicy in the mouth, and long-lasting. It is made with home-grown apples.

ISASTEGI BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

They have produced cider in Isategi farm since the 17th century. The cider production of Isastegi has been developped during centuries in a region where the production of cider was part of the culture. This unique product emerged with the knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

Isastegi Euskal Sagardo Ekologikoa is produced with apples from suppliers in Tolosaldea, located within a distance of 15 kilometers from Isastegi. This cider has fresh aromas of flowers and fruits and is balanced on the palate, with a great balance of subtle tannins and acidity.

PETRITEGI BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

To make their organic cider, Petritegi uses apples from home-grown organic apple trees, and to ferment the must, they used Urtebi Haundi apple yeast obtained at home. Petritegi is clearly committed to sustainability, as demonstratedby the BIOBOX project launched in 2019 to control insect pests using birds and bats. It is being run in collaboration with several Gipuzkoa cider houses, in collaboration with the Aranzadi Science Society and the Euskal Sagardoa Designation of Origin.

Petritegi Euskal Sagardo Ekologikoa has a straw-yellow color and green tones with a fine carbonation, balsamic aromas, and freshness that stand out for their balance in the mouth.

OLA BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

Cider has always been made at the farmhouse in Ola, but in 1999, the Bengoetxea family built the current OLA CIDER HOUSE, erecting and renovating the walls of the 13th-century forge. Today, the cider house is located in the Arantzate forge, renovating the old farmhouse and the old forge behind it. The walls that have survived to this day are spectacular and give the cider house a special charm.

Ola produces all its cider organically, as its apple orchards and those of its suppliers are all organic. The most commonly used apple varieties are Moko, Patzuloa, Goikoetxe, Urtebi Handi, Errezila, and especially Arantzate, the valley-apple variety, both sour and bitter, which gives Ola ciders a special character. These are yellowish ciders, with a deep apple aroma and a very characterful, juicy, and rounded palate.

BEREZIARTUA ORGANIC CIDER

Organic natural cider produced at the Bereziartua Cider House in Astigarraga and endorsed by the EENEK (Euskadi Council for Organic Agriculture and Food). It is made with native and foreign organic apples: native Txalaka and Urtebia and the French Judeline and Judor, among others. It is a fine, golden cider, with fresh fruit aromas and a balanced palate.

ZELAIA BASQUE ORGANIC CIDER

The Gaincerain family has been making cider at the Zelaia cider house since the late 19th century, and it was Joakin Gaincerain who first took it on professionally. Since then, Zelaia has become a renowned cider house that has developed and adapted year after year. Zelaia Organic Cider is made with organic apples from the Donamaria apple orchard in Navarre. Made by blending different types of apples, it is golden, with aromas of fruit and flowers, and juicy in the mouth, yet lingering and balanced.
