There is no greater satisfaction than tasting a delicious drink made by yourself, the result of your efforts and that of your friends or family; in this case we are talking about natural apple juice.
At Sagardoa Route we propose a day that the little ones in the family will hardly forget. It is the perfect plan to complement your visit and meal at a Basque cider house and spend a special morning with family or friends.
The experience will begin in the apple orchard of the cider house where the guide will give a short introduction about the apple orchard in which we are and the varieties of Basque apple that we are going to collect to make the must. Once we know the cider apples that we are going to use, we will begin the work.
We grab the wicker basket and the “kixkia” and the action begins! We will collect the apples in the traditional way in which they are still collected in the Basque Country. Once our baskets are full of fruit, we will approach the processing area.
In the production area we will find different tools for making our juice. Before starting, the guide will explain the use of the tampers and the small press that we will use. And after learning how to use them, we will all collaborate in making apple juice.
The first step is to cut the apples into small pieces, and for that we will use wooden tampers, with which we will crush the apples. When we have crushed all the apples, we will take our wooden shovels and put the apple pieces into our small manual press, which can be used by the whole family.
Once the press is filled, we will all begin to turn the crank, which will put pressure on the apples, and little by little we will see how our liquid gold begins to fall through the slots of the press into the jar that we will have positioned under it.
When the jug is full of juice, the most special moment of the experience arrives: tasting the delicious natural apple juice!
After tasting the must, you will have the opportunity to discover the secrets of the family cider house or the farm cellar before sitting down to enjoy the traditional cider house menu.
The traditional cider house menu includes; House appetizer, cod omelette, fried cod with peppers, grilled T-bone steak, cheese, quince and walnuts. The children's menu usually includes steak, loin or breasts with potatoes and ice cream. All this with natural cider and apple juice.
