Igartubeiti press farm: CIDER WEEK

04/10/2024

The Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum celebrates Cider Week from October 9 to 19.

The XVIth century pressing machine in operation!

Igartubeiti press farm: CIDER WEEK

The Igartubeiti Press Farmhouse is a building built in the 16th century that represents the Golden Age of Basque farmhouses. Despite being built in the 16th century, it was a century later when it reached its full potential, as the hamlet was expanded on all 4 sides to adapt to the new jobs and ways of life that emerged in the 17th century. It is a unique farmhouse in the Basque Country thanks to the good conservation of its original wooden structure and, above all, the existence of a large winepress on the second floor of the farmhouse, with which the family made cider for their own consumption and for sale. every year.

In 1992, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa acquired the Igartubeiti hamlet with the clear objective of preserving this small piece of living history. After a decade of research and a complex restoration, the farmhouse has recovered the historical image it had at the beginning of the 17th century. Today, and thanks to the hard work carried out by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and all its collaborators, Igartubeiti has become a very special museum. Inside, the real life of the old Basque farmhouses is recreated, where you can experience what the life of these families was like more than four centuries ago, with their original lighting, furniture and tools, and even with the smells and aromas that surround them. permeated in their time.

In addition, the Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum celebrates Cider Week from October 9 to 19. This is the only time of the year in which the press farm is put into operation and in which you can see firsthand the pressing of the apple, the production of the juice that, in a few months, ferments and becomes cider. The Cider Week will be accompanied by a rich program in which, in addition to apple pressing, you can see dramatizations, kirikoketa exhibitions and visit Chillida Lantoki. Following the Ezkio museum's commitment to sustainability, the entire block that will be pressed that week will be from the Igartubeiti area.

The Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum celebrates the XXIII edition of Cider Week, the most important event of the year for the center. At this event, visitors to the hamlet, only once throughout the year, witness a daily activity in the Igartubeiti hamlet: they can see the winepress in operation and the apple pressing live.

Pressed with rhythm and exhibitions

In addition, the apple pressing on October 12, 13 and 19 will be accompanied by a kirikoketa group, a rhythmic sound that is produced during the process of hitting the apples. The “sagarjoaleak” are part of a group that emerged from workshops organized by Igartubeiti and taught by Juan Mari Beltran, researcher, promoter and one of the most important figures in Basque popular music.

Cider Week is also an opportunity to get to know the Igartubeiti farmhouse through those who lived there. On October 12, 13 and 19, starting at 11:15 a.m., there will be theatrical performances; the Kortabarria family, inhabitants of the hamlet at the beginning of the 17th century, will be represented by the Karmakros theater group of Urretxu-Zumarraga and by the Tolosarra actress Amaia Ruiz de Galarreta.

In this edition, on the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eduardo Chillida, on October 12 and 19, a guided tour in Spanish will be offered to Chillida Lantoki at  5:00 p.m.

The apple will be the protagonist of this event in its many facets. During the cider week, some of the apple varieties collected in the Igartubeiti apple orchards will also be exhibited.

People who come to Igartubeiti these days will also be able to learn about the origin and uniqueness of Basque culture and cuisine, through the exhibition “The world painted in 4 flavors.”

Cider week, the result of a process

The Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum has been working on its wealth for years, starting from the farmhouse as a heritage axis, from care, respect, seeking the balance between the environment, its resources, the uses and services it offers. Beyond a specific activity of the year, Cider Week is the result of a process, the natural cycle of the apple, which develops from winter to autumn, from one year to the next.

In this process prior to pressing, different stages have taken place during the year, respecting the natural cycle, which includes: the care of the apple trees, the activation of the sap, flowering, fruit development and harvesting. After pressing in October, the process continues with the fermentation of the juice in the barrels of the farmhouse, until the cider is tasted in March, within the framework of the celebration of the Barrikote festival in Igartubeiti. On this occasion, visitors have the opportunity to taste the cider produced in the farmhouse.

Cider Week activity program:

  • The Igartubeiti apple pressing operation: October 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 at 11:30 a.m.
  • The Igartubeiti apple pressing to the rhythm of Kirikoketa: October 12, 13 and 19 at 12:00.
  • Theatre in the farm: October 12, 13 and 19 at 11:15
  • Guided tour in Spanish to Chillida-Lantoki: October 12 and 19 at 5:00 p.m.
